Frequently asked questions
How does the compression work?
Each image is re-encoded in your browser at the quality you choose — a lower quality produces a smaller file. Nothing is uploaded.
Could compressing ever make a file larger?
With “keep the original if compression makes it larger” enabled (the default) and no resize set, the tool returns your original whenever re-encoding wouldn’t shrink it.
What does the “Auto” output format do?
Auto keeps each image in its original format — a JPEG stays JPEG, a PNG stays PNG — while still re-encoding it at the chosen quality.
Can I shrink dimensions too, not just file size?
Yes. Enable resize and set a maximum width and height; images are scaled to fit inside that box, preserving aspect ratio.
How do I know how much smaller the result is?
Each result shows the original size, the new size, and the percentage change so you can compare before and after.
